Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway

The 234-mile-long Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway includes 44,000 acres of lakes and 13,000 acres of land designated as recreational areas; an additional 88,000 acres are part of an expansion plan for wildlife refuges and hunting areas. Environmental preservation and protection have taken precedence since the opening of the waterway in 1985. the "Tenn-Tom" Waterway is easy to navigate and provides opportunities for excursions to interesting towns like Aberdeen and Columbus. Hunting is another top sport in the Tenn-Tom region. Deer, waterfowl, turkey, and small game are abundant. The Town Creek Recreation Area sits on the banks of the old Tombigbee River and has over one hundred campsites. a sand beach, boat docks, and launching ramps. Kennedy Lake, located on a hilltop overlooking the waterway, is encircled by an enchanting hiking path with a series of wooden footbridges. There are scenic biking trails and multi use play courts for basketball, volleyball, and badminton. The Waverly Recreation Area offers similar amenities as well as a trail that passes by the Waverly Slave Cemetery historic site.
