SportsPlex:

A very popular project, a state-of-the-art sports complex, was planned and developed during the past four year period. Funded by a special 1 cent sales tax on hotels and restaurants in the City, the 83 acre facility sets the standard for municipal sports complexes. The facility contains 12 regulation-sized baseball, softball, and minor league fields, copious vehicle parking, and adequate restroom and concession stand facilities. Built at a cost of $1.5 million dollars, the new facility was, in May 2001, named the Jesse W. Harmon Sports Complex, in honor of retiring Vice Mayor Jesse Harmon. Mr. Harmon served on the Board of Mayor and Selectmen from July, 1969 through June, 2001, longer than any other person has served on the City Board.  Please click here to see a night photograph and an overview drawing of the new West Point SportsPlex on N. Eshman Avenue.   The Daily Times Leader has also granted us permission to reprint their news article published at the Grand Opening of the facility.

Golf:

GolfCourse.com lists nearly two hundred golf courses in Mississippi and the West Point/Golden Triangle area includes approximately twenty courses within short driving distance.  The 'crown jewel' of Mississippi courses is of course Old Waverly Golf Club's championship course located here in West Point but there are many nice courses like The West Point Country Club, Elm Lake, Lakeview, and Mississippi State University's Golf Club to offer a convenient variety.  If you enjoy golf, you have found home!

Outdoors:

The West Point and Clay county area is bordered on the east by the Tennessee/Tombigbee Waterway and the city is itself home to Haas Outdoors and B&M Pole Co.  To say that West Point offers a wide range of outdoor sporting options would be an understatement!  The rich farm land provides plenty of food for the wildlife (much to the chagrin of the farmers) and the abundance of lakes and streams makes the area a fisherman's paradise.  Whether you like to hunt small game, whitetail deer, water foul, or just relax and fish for bass, catfish, crappie, and brim, you can find a spot here.   Water ski the waterway or buy a home nearby and dock your boat!

Football:

This is the SOUTH and we love football.  West Point has three high school teams, three junior high teams, a little league, and to top it all off a major Southeastern Conference University less than 20 miles away.   You like football?  You come.

CONGRATULATIONS to the West Point Green Wave football teams. The Junior Varsity team claimed the Big VI conference title while the varsity team captured the North State 4A championship!

Not Football:

MSU has won eleven Southeastern Conference baseball championships and always fields a great team to fill many summer afternoons with joy for area fans.  Local youth sports programs from Dixie Youth to American Legion baseball provide parents and old coaches a wealth of entertainment with the character building benefits to the children.  The area schools and other programs provide basketball, girls and boys soccer leagues, volleyball, and a multitude of other sports to fill out the year.   The long summers and mild winters make both playing and attending sporting events a favorite pastime for area residents.

CONGRATULATIONS to West Point's Bryan Packers who are sitting atop the world of American Legion baseball. The Packers won the national title by beating Excelsior, Minnesota 4-0 in the championship game.  The team finished with 46 wins and only 10 losses.

CONGRATULATIONS to West Point's Oak Hill Raider Baseball Team who captured the Mississippi Private School Association's 2AA Championship and earned a trip to the State Title Game.  Another great season for the Red Raiders!

Resorts:

A few years ago the state of Mississippi legalized casino gambling and much debate has been made of its benefits and detractions in any area.  If you are reading this page and are not familiar with our state's law you may think Mississippi is the Nevada of the south but that is not the case.  Gambling is only allowed along the Mississippi River, the Gulf coast, and in the special case of Federally regulated Indian lands.  The city of West Point is not located near either the coast or the river and consequently we are not concerned with the advantages or ills of legalized gambling, we are just glad our schools benefit from the state tax dollars the casinos generate.  We are, however, located close enough (2 hours away) to the Choctaw Indian Reservation's Silver Star Resort and Casino to make weekend get-aways very convenient for those who enjoy the dining, golf, and gambling, offered by the resort atmosphere.  We think our location is excellent, close enough to enjoy an occasional trip but not so close as to have gambling on our doorstep.

Sights and Events:

West Point and the surrounding area is simply blessed with natural beauty and rich southern history.  On any given day, at any time of the year, one can find some kind of simple and natural event to visit, view, and enjoy.  In addition to our local arts festival, virtually all of the surrounding communities have similar events.  Columbus has the Possum Town Pigfest, Amory sports an annual Railroad festival, Houston tributes old farm machinery with their Flywheel festival, and the list goes on and on.  Please take the time to view our "Attractions" area on the website to learn more.
