William Ward Love, Jr.
Seaman First Class - Ship's Cook
USS Dickerson
U.S. Navy

Mr. Love was born on October 7, 1920 and was educated in the West Point school system. He enlisted in the Navy in August 1941 and was assigned to fleet operations in the Pacific aboard the USS Dickerson, one of the famous "flush deck" destroyers that had been converted in August 1943 to a high speed transport ship for landing troops.

In April, 1945 the USS Dickerson took part in fleet operations in support of the Allied assault on Ryukus Island, near Okinawa. Seaman Love was at his battle station as a Trainer on the number one 3" gun on the forecastle on the night of April 2, 1945. The Dickerson was hit by a Japanese Betty bomber which suicided into her bridge and Seaman Love's duty station. He was killed instantly, his body never recovered. Two days later, the USS Dickerson was scuttled and sank off the coast of Okinawa.

His Commanding Officer, wrote that he was an "old hand" aboard ship. He was survived by three brothers and two sisters, including Mrs. Eleanor Craig of West Point
