Mr. Hamlin was born on July 16, 1919. He attended West Point High School, where he was a star backfield player on the football team. In 1940, he left West Point with the National Guard unit when it was called to active duty.

He was assigned to the Army Engineers and remained in the States until June 1942. His unit was transfered to the European theater of operations in June 1942 and participated in the Allied invasion of Europe in June 1944.

Sergeant Hamlin was killed on October 7, 1944 during combat operations in Belgium, when the jeep in which he was riding crashed into a bridge. He was 25 years old, never married.

He was survived by four brothers, Hap, Eric, and Bill Hamlin of West Point and two sisters, Mrs. J.E. Spratt, Jr. of Aberdeen and Mrs. C.H. Harris of Los Angeles.

V.F.W. Post 2098 is named in honor of Mr. Hamlin and Mr. George M. Durrett. Both gentlemen were members of the West Point National Guard Company C, which was activated as the United States entered World War II.
