Private Randolph "Shorty" Carty died December 23, 1944, in Luxembourg, Germany, at the age of 31 years, while serving with General Patton's Army at "The Battle of the Bulge". The following is an excerpt of his death notice in the Calhoun City newspaper:
A telegram from the War Department last week brought the sad news of the death of a gallant soldier, Pvt. Randolph Carty, better known here as "Shorty" Carty, who was killed in Luxembourg, near Germany, while serving with General Patton's army.

Pvt. Carty, who was reared at Pheba, Miss., came to Calhoun County some years ago while serving in the Civilian Conservation Corps. About five years ago, he was married, and had resided here until he volunteered for service in the army eight months ago. He received his training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and had been over seas for about two months.

Pvt. Carty had a wide circle of friends in this county. he was an affable, generous and considerate young man and had a talent for making friends. He was employed while here as a service station man, taxi driver and later was a bus driver for many months on the Grenada-Aberdeen bus line. He was an honest and reliable citizen and was held in highest esteem by the people of this community.

The family has not received any further information as to his death other than the telegram announcing that he was killed in action.
Mr. Carty's father is Mr. J.B. Carty of Route 2, West Point, Ms., in the Una Community. His mother, Mrs. J.B. Carty lived in Calhoun City with two other sons. In addition to being survived by his parents, Mr. Carty was also survived by his sister, Mrs. J.P. Champion of Pheba, and three half sisters living in Una as well as his wife and two children.
